Background of the Study
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are among the most common healthcare-associated infections, contributing significantly to patient morbidity and healthcare costs (Udo et al., 2023). In hospitals, indwelling urinary catheters are frequently used for patients who require urinary drainage, but they are also a leading cause of urinary tract infections when not managed properly. Nurses play a vital role in the prevention of CAUTIs, including the proper insertion, maintenance, and removal of urinary catheters, as well as the implementation of hygiene and infection control practices (Abubakar et al., 2024). At Adamawa State Specialist Hospital, urinary catheter-related infections remain a significant concern, but the extent to which nurses understand their role in preventing CAUTIs and follow established protocols has not been fully explored. This study will examine the role of nurses in reducing the incidence of CAUTIs, focusing on their knowledge, practices, and adherence to infection control measures.
Statement of the Problem
Despite advances in healthcare and infection control practices, CAUTIs remain a persistent problem in many healthcare settings, including Adamawa State Specialist Hospital. The improper use and maintenance of urinary catheters can lead to the introduction of bacteria into the urinary tract, increasing the risk of infections, prolonged hospital stays, and higher treatment costs (Abubakar et al., 2024). Nurses' adherence to best practices, such as maintaining sterile techniques during catheter insertion and ensuring timely removal, is critical in reducing the incidence of CAUTIs. However, there is limited research on the role of nurses at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital in preventing CAUTIs, and the factors influencing their practices need to be explored.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital involved in the care of patients with indwelling urinary catheters. A limitation is that the study may not capture the full range of factors influencing CAUTI prevention, as it will rely primarily on self-reported data. Additionally, the findings may not be applicable to other hospitals with different organizational structures or resources.
