Background of the Study
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are among the most common healthcare-associated infections, contributing significantly to patient morbidity and healthcare costs (Udo et al., 2023). In hospitals, indwelling urinary catheters are frequently used for patients who require urinary drainage, but they are also a leading cause of urinary tract infections when not managed properly. Nurses play a vital role in the prevention of CAUTIs, including the proper insertion, maintenance, and removal of urinary catheters, as well as the implementation of hygiene and infection control practices (Abubakar et al., 2024). At Adamawa State Specialist Hospital, urinary catheter-related infections remain a significant concern, but the extent to which nurses understand their role in preventing CAUTIs and follow established protocols has not been fully explored. This study will examine the role of nurses in reducing the incidence of CAUTIs, focusing on their knowledge, practices, and adherence to infection control measures.

Statement of the Problem
Despite advances in healthcare and infection control practices, CAUTIs remain a persistent problem in many healthcare settings, including Adamawa State Specialist Hospital. The improper use and maintenance of urinary catheters can lead to the introduction of bacteria into the urinary tract, increasing the risk of infections, prolonged hospital stays, and higher treatment costs (Abubakar et al., 2024). Nurses' adherence to best practices, such as maintaining sterile techniques during catheter insertion and ensuring timely removal, is critical in reducing the incidence of CAUTIs. However, there is limited research on the role of nurses at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital in preventing CAUTIs, and the factors influencing their practices need to be explored.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the knowledge of nurses regarding CAUTI prevention practices at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital.
  2. To evaluate the implementation of CAUTI prevention measures by nurses at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital.
  3. To identify factors influencing nurses' practices in preventing CAUTIs at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses regarding CAUTI prevention practices at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital?
  2. How effectively do nurses at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital implement CAUTI prevention measures?
  3. What factors influence nurses' practices in preventing CAUTIs at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital have inadequate knowledge of CAUTI prevention practices.
  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' knowledge of CAUTI prevention and their adherence to infection control measures.
  3. Organizational and resource-related factors significantly influence nurses' practices in preventing CAUTIs at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working at Adamawa State Specialist Hospital involved in the care of patients with indwelling urinary catheters. A limitation is that the study may not capture the full range of factors influencing CAUTI prevention, as it will rely primarily on self-reported data. Additionally, the findings may not be applicable to other hospitals with different organizational structures or resources.

Definitions of Terms

  • Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTIs): Urinary tract infections that occur in patients with indwelling urinary catheters, typically due to improper insertion or maintenance.
  • Nurses' Role in CAUTI Prevention: The involvement of nurses in ensuring proper catheter insertion, maintenance, and timely removal to reduce the risk of infections.
  • Infection Control Measures: The protocols and practices implemented to prevent the spread of infections, including hygiene practices and sterile techniques.
  • Knowledge of CAUTI Prevention: The understanding that nurses have regarding the causes, prevention, and management of CAUTIs.
